Jennifer Hedge studied Fine Arts in the Okanagan from 1984-1986 and then began working full time in theatre as a scenic artist at venues such as the Vancouver Playhouse, Banff Centre, and Calgary Opera. Over the past 24 years, sets she has painted have been enjoyed by audiences throughout North America, and she has earned recognition as one of the best at her craft.
The use of acrylics in her theatre work has enabled her to acquire considerable knowledge and skill about this specific medium and Jennifer has become adept at using them to their full advantage in her own paintings. Layers of glazes and washes are used to achieve unique effects of colour and depth.
Jennifer is influenced by the painters of the Romantic movement and their expression of personal ideas, visions and expression; imagination governed the creative act rather than convention. She finds the work of Turner particularly compelling, specifically the way in which he brought his appreciation of nature to his art. Her main inspiration comes from nature; the many turbulent forces herein and our impact on wild places and the creatures inhabiting them.
Jennifer divides her time between Vancouver Island and the Canadian Rocky Mountains . The intensity of these landscapes effects and is conveyed through her art work. Her palette made up of historical colours, reflect the landscapes around her.
